I have been using it now for about a month and up to now it has been excellent. It does make som noise when firing up but no more than I would expect. It is doing the job as described and I am very happy with it. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Quick Reviews! (20 March 2010)After working with a few dodgy External Hard Drives I was searching for one with enough space, speed, and reliability to back up some music, pictures, and documents that were taking a chunk from my laptop. I was initially reluctant to get this after seeing quite a few 1 star reviews complaining about a loud clicking noise and various failures. I saw though that the company had admitted the problem was affecting some units and that they were giving replacements and refunds (as well as the 2 year warranty), so I thought I would give it a go- if I got a faulty one I could always get my money back. Luckily for me, I have not encountered any of the problems that some of the one star reviews mention. This arrived in a nice package, complete with instructions for the inexperienced and a dust cover to keep your stylish black unit looking nice on the shelf. Thankfully this can be set on any surface thanks to the feet meaning you don't have to fiddle with keeping it upright- it may take up space this way, but you can set it sideways when it isn't being used. The colour and shape are pretty cool and it isn't very heavy but doesn't feel or look cheap. Setting it up is as simple as it gets, plug in the adaptor (which comes in two pronged format if you are travelling) and insert the USB cable. You can complete a short registration form and then you should be ready. Too many memory devices now make things overly complicated but this is strictly drag and drop. I use Vista with a Dell laptop, and there were no difficulties in setting everything up. Once I began moving files the machine gave off a slight whir but no oppresive clicking or rattling. I movied a large folder of pictures (about a GB) and the device didn't have any difficulties- everything was done efficiently. My laptop is getting on a bit and any speed issues were due to it rather than the Hard Drive, although I was pleased overall. The same goes for the transfer of my music files. There was little or no heat given off, and I was able to turn it off quickly as the transfer was fairly speedy. I've used it a few times since my first experiments- everything has stored without issue (I got it at Christmas). This fits well on my narrow DVD shelves without taking up much room so space shouldn't be an issue. Overall I have been extremely pleased with this, Santa and Seagate have done a great job and I feel secure that I haven't ans will lot lose anything that I have moved- highly recommended. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Fragile, be warned (18 March 2010)I had this and it worked for about a week, it fell off the bed where I was using it with my laptop to back up all my files and it landed on the soft carpet and that was that. It broke. In fairness, I shouldn't have let it fall, but it fell about a foot, 18 inches at most and broke, for good. I now have a useless, expensive doorstop. I therefore cannot recommend it as it is flimsy. I would expect it to survive a fall such as this. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Great .... BUT! (18 March 2010)Very good price even amongst the growing competition of terrabyte drives, looks great but a pity it doesn't have a vertical stand option. The major problem I have is the drive is not detected on boot up in XP!!! So I have to remove the power plug before booting and re-insert it afterwards. This could perhaps be resolved with some bios tweaks but I'd rather not have the hassle as I'm no techy and lets be clear... USB should work out of the box these days! I've done a little research and it seems this is a known problem with the drive? Every other external USB 2.0 drive I've had has booted up without a hitch so it must be the Seagate that has an issue. Shame otherwise it would be a 5 star buy. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Seagate External HDD (16 March 2010)I bought this to free up some space on my laptop as it was getting full of the usual stuff. I chose Seagate as I thought these were a good brand, and the price was appealing. So far so good no problems at all , it took no setting up just plug in and go - jobs a good 'un. |
